1945 Area Fellowship Meeting

The Order of the Arrow lodges of North Carolina were invited by Tali Taktaki Lodge to a gathering at Camp Graystone in September 1945.  Greensboro Council’s former Assistant Scout Executive Bob Wolff was the leader in organizing and promoting this event. Earlier in the year he had accepted a new job as Scout Executive of Tuscarora Council headquartered in Goldsboro.

About 175 Arrowmen from around the state arrived at camp, some on Friday night and many more the next morning.  An Ordeal was conducted during the weekend and candidates began the process on Friday night.

1945 Fellowship Meeting_Page_1The Opening General Session started at 10:00am on Saturday with a Welcome by Greensboro Council Scout Executive George Thomason.  The “Purpose of the Meeting” was explained by Winston-Salem Council Scout Executive W.E. Vaughan-Lloyd and Bob Wolff outlined the program for the weekend.

A special guest attended the Area Fellowship.  H. Lloyd Nelson, National OA Chief, addressed the participants after lunch on Saturday.  The afternoon was dominated by discussion groups.  The topics and leaders were as follows:

A – Selection of Candidates & Voting Procedures – Mr. Vaughan-Lloyd

B – Conducting Ordeal & Projects during Ordeal – Claude Humphries

C – Costumes – Bob Wolff

D – OA Projects – George Thomason

E – Lodge Officer Elections & Duties – G.E.Ashwill (Central NC Scout Executive)

At 4:00 everyone assembled to hear reports from each groups’ scribe and to have general open discussion.

There are a lot of good looking patches being made today, but even some of the biggest and most colorful multi-piece NOAC/Jambo sets can’t compare to the simplicity of these older designs. And from a collector’s perspective, I’d rather have one piece to commemorate an event rather than twenty.

I enjoyed the article about the 1945 Fellowship Meeting. I was attending a Fellowship Meeting back in the seventies at the new camp in Tuscarora Council and found lying in the dirt one of these Fellowship Slides to my surprise. I donated it to Hammerstone Historical Society. I wonder how it got there and where it is now?

Wow what a story! Hammerstone is still going as a Scout Museum. Wayne Farrar is on Facebook if you want to reach out and say hello to him. Thanks for sharing.
